Does NLP Anchoring Actually Help You Focus When You Read?

NLP anchoring promises focus on command. NLP itself has no empirical support. What's actually left of the ritual, what part of it works, and how to test it.

The promise is clean, which is exactly why it catches on. You pick a gesture, attach it to a state of focus you once had, and from then on the gesture reopens it on command. Three seconds, instead of ten minutes of fidgeting through the first few pages.

The technique is called anchoring, and it comes from neuro-linguistic programming. Before anything else, here's the part the courses skip: NLP, taken as a whole, has no empirical support. The reviews that tested its central claims don't confirm them.

That doesn't make everything under the label useless, but it does mean nothing comes pre-validated. This particular piece holds up, partly. Just not for the reason you're given.

How to Install an Anchor in Ten Minutes

The taught protocol has seven steps and is learned in a single session.

You pick a trigger you don't use for anything else during the day, usually a thumb pressed against the first knuckle of your index finger. You reconstruct, in your mind, a moment when you were genuinely absorbed in something you were reading, and let the image thicken until you feel something in your body: slower breathing, shoulders dropping. Right at the peak you apply the gesture, hold it a few seconds, and release it before the state fades.

You break state, look out the window, and repeat the pairing three times. At the end you test it: you do only the gesture and see if anything follows. From then on, before every session, you press for two seconds, take a long breath, and start the text already in the prepared state, not cold.

The question that remains is what this actually delivers, measured.

What's Left of NLP After Forty Years of Scrutiny

Not much, and it's documented.

Sharpley reviewed the research behind the method's core claims in 1987, including the idea that everyone has a "preferred representational system" you can detect and match. The data didn't support it, and he was already asking whether the theory was precise enough to be testable at all.

Witkowski counted everything published on the subject in 2010. Out of several hundred papers collected in the field's own database, 63 had appeared in indexed journals. Fewer than a fifth backed NLP's claims, and more than half contradicted them.

In 2012, a systematic review in the British Journal of General Practice pulled together studies measuring NLP interventions against health outcomes. Sturt and colleagues' conclusion: the evidence for any improvement is thin. Around the same time, Wiseman's team directly tested one of the method's most popular claims, that the direction someone's eyes move tells you whether they're lying. No connection.

Hold onto the shape of that verdict. It hasn't been shown that anchoring doesn't work, only that the package it comes wrapped in guarantees you nothing. What's left is to look at the mechanism itself.

Pavlov Is Cited Correctly and Used Wrong

The standard argument for anchoring is classical conditioning. Bell, food, salivation. Conditioning is real, and it's among the best-documented phenomena in psychology, so the reference sounds solid. Watch what changes along the way.

In Pavlov's experiment, the second stimulus produces the response on its own, involuntarily, regardless of what the animal thinks about any of it. The pairing repeats dozens of times, and the response is measured externally, in millilitres.

With an anchor, the "food" is a state you generate yourself, by imagining it. The pairing repeats three times, in one afternoon. And the response is measured by the same person who paid for the course that told them they'd feel something, four minutes later.

Every substitution weakens the analogy. What's left isn't conditioning in Pavlov's sense anymore, it's a signal you've learned to attach to an intention, which runs on different rules entirely.

And one more thing, stated plainly, or I'd be repeating the mistake I'm criticizing here: nobody has measured anchoring applied to reading. There is no study, for or against. What follows is a reconstruction built from things measured separately.

What Actually Holds Up, Under a Different Name

The first few minutes of reading really are the worst, and there's a measured explanation for it.

When you switch from one task to another without finishing the first, part of your attention stays hooked on it, and the new task performs worse. Leroy measured the effect in 2009 and called it attention residue. You sit down with the book forty minutes after a stretch of messaging, and the messages walk into the page with you.

A start-of-session ritual doesn't open up a state. It does something more modest: it marks the boundary between what you were doing and what comes next.

A stable context helps too, through a different door. In 1975, Godden and Baddeley had divers learn word lists on land or underwater: they recalled better in the environment where they'd learned them. The effect is real but modest. Habits work the same way, stuck to their context: when the circumstances change, the habit weakens (Wood, Tam, & Guerrero Witt, 2005).

Here's the core of it. What works isn't the gesture, it's the fact that the same place, the same time, and the same opening move shorten the distance between "I should read" and "I'm reading."

The closest thing to a validated anchor goes by a different name: implementation intention. You formulate a plan in advance shaped like "when X happens, I do Y." A meta-analysis of 94 studies found a medium-to-large effect for plans built this way (Gollwitzer & Sheeran, 2006).

The difference from an NLP anchor looks small, but it's decisive. A plan ties a trigger to an action. An anchor ties a trigger to a state. The first version can be checked and holds up. The second is the one nobody has demonstrated.

Sixty Seconds, Written as a Plan

Here's the version without the terminology.

The evening before, leave the book open at your bookmark, on the table where you'll be reading. Zero decisions the next day. Phone in another room, not just face-down.

Write one sentence and stick to it for a month: "When I sit down at the kitchen table after dinner, I open the book at my bookmark and read for twenty minutes." That's the plan, with a place and a time attached, not a general intention to read more.

Ten seconds for a question, said out loud or written in the margin: what do I want to find out in this chapter. "Why does the author reject the explanation from chapter two."

If you're attached to the gesture, keep it, but for what it actually is: it doesn't switch anything on, it's a bookmark for your attention.

Then you read. No warm-up. The first page is the warm-up.

The Part That Works Is Repetition, Not the Anchor

Lally and colleagues followed almost a hundred people in 2010 as each installed a daily action inside a fixed context. Automaticity showed up, for half of them, at around 66 days. The spread is wide: anywhere from 18 days to 254.

There's no ten-minute installation session that hands you a switch. There's a routine kept up for weeks, in the same place, that eventually starts firing on its own.

This is also why the test on day one tells you nothing. You do the gesture, feel something, declare victory. You built it four minutes ago, you want it to work, and you're also the measuring instrument. It's the same error as the feeling that you understood a page, which I wrote about in I read but remember nothing.

A test that can actually fail looks different, and it measures exactly what an anchor promises: how fast you get into the task.

Read for twenty minutes and mark the page at the five-minute mark. Compare the pages from the first five minutes with the pages from the last five. The difference between them is your start-up cost, the only number a start-of-session ritual should be able to move. Keep it up for two weeks, alternating ritual days with no-ritual days, and see whether the cold stretch has moved closer to the warm one.

What No Start-of-Session Ritual Fixes

For a lot of people, state was never the problem.

The strongest measured predictor of reading speed isn't any warm-up technique, it's how quickly you recognize words, which comes down to vocabulary and how much you already know about the subject (Kuperman & Van Dyke, 2011). A flawlessly executed ritual in front of a text you have no foothold in still leaves you at 200 words per minute.

If you drift back to the same line, if the voice in your head dictates syllable by syllable, or if your mind leaves the page, each of those is a separate brake, with its own signs. I've catalogued them, with the test that tells you which one is yours, in why do I read so slowly.

So anchoring is neither an occult trick nor nonsense. It's a start-of-session routine dressed in a theory bigger than it needs. Strip the theory, keep the routine, give it the same place and the same time for a few weeks, and measure your start-up cost before and after.

The gesture doesn't switch anything on. Repetition does.
