Palming: How to Rest Your Eyes After Reading, Without the False Promises

You've been reading for two hours. Your eyes sting, the lines blur for a second when you look up, and somewhere behind your forehead a dull pressure has settled in.

You look for something to do about it and come across palming. You rub your palms together, cup them over your closed eyes, and sit in the dark for a minute.

The advice is sound. The story that comes attached to it isn't, and it's best to separate the two from the start, so you don't expect from a minute of darkness something it was never going to deliver.

The Motion, Exactly: Palms, Not Just Eyelids

The description fits in four lines. Sit with your elbows resting on a table or your knees, so your neck doesn't carry the weight of your arms. Rub your palms together for a few seconds until they warm up. Close your eyelids, then cup your palms over them: your fingers overlap on your forehead, the base of your palms rests on your cheekbones.

Your eyes stay free, in a small pocket of air. The palm doesn't press against anything.

What separates this from simply closing your eyes is a detail you can check on the spot. The eyelid isn't opaque. Close your eyes facing a window or a lamp and you'll see red, orange, sometimes even the glowing outline of the light source. Add your palms, and only then does it go black.

That's the whole difference, mechanically speaking. What it's worth is a longer discussion, which I get into below.

The Man Who Promised You'd Ditch Your Glasses

Palming isn't a technique without an author. It comes from William Horatio Bates, an American ophthalmologist who published his method in 1920, in a book later reissued under the title Better Eyesight Without Glasses.

His thesis was ambitious. Bates argued that nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism didn't come from the shape of the eye, but from chronic tension in the muscles that move it from the outside. These muscles, he claimed, squeezed the eyeball and deformed it. Relax them, he said, and vision returns. Palming, sun exposure, and eye-swinging exercises were the tools of relaxation, and glasses became, in this logic, a crutch that kept the problem alive.

This part has been debunked, and it's worth saying before anything else: palming doesn't change your prescription. Not with two minutes a day, and not with two years of it.

Why It Doesn't Change Your Prescription

The reason is anatomical, and fairly dry.

In the large majority of cases, nearsightedness means an eyeball that's slightly longer than it should be. The image forms in front of the retina, not on it. We're talking tenths of a millimeter, but they're tenths of a millimeter of tissue, the result of the eye's own growth. No amount of muscle relaxation shortens an eye. Astigmatism comes from the curvature of the cornea, and presbyopia, the one that sends you looking for reading glasses somewhere in your forties, comes from the lens gradually losing its elasticity.

The mechanism Bates proposed was examined critically in the optometry literature, and it didn't hold up. A review published in 1952 by Elwin Marg looked specifically at the "moments of clear vision" that Bates's patients reported, since these were the method's central piece of evidence. The conclusion: the experience was real, but it had mundane explanations, from squinting the eyelids, which works like a camera aperture, to the tear film and the learned habit of interpreting a blurry image. Refraction itself stayed unchanged.

The consequence isn't academic. If you take off your glasses convinced the exercises have fixed your vision, you see worse and you drive worse, and that's not something to joke about. And someone who believes they're treating their eyes with palming delays the checkup where something else might have been found.

It's the same pattern as with photoreading: a small, harmless core, wrapped in a huge promise that was never going to be true. The core stays useful. The wrapping gets thrown out.

The Break Is Real, Even If the Theory Isn't

Here's the part worth keeping. You don't need Bates's theory to justify a one-minute break. The break defends itself.

While you read, your eyes do mechanical work you don't feel, because you don't see it happening. You don't glide smoothly along the line, you jump: you stop for around two hundred milliseconds, pull in information, then make a short leap and stop again (Rayner, 1998). At an ordinary pace, around two hundred forty words per minute, that works out to roughly three stops per second. That's over ten thousand stops and just as many jumps in a single hour of reading, on top of the muscles holding your eyes converged at close range the whole time.

The literature on visual fatigue from prolonged close-up work, especially at screens, is consistent on one modest point: short, repeated breaks reduce symptoms of dryness, temporary blurring, and discomfort (Rosenfield, 2016). They don't cure anything and they don't shift a single diopter. They make the next hour more bearable, which is exactly what you ask of a break.

And now the limit, so I don't end up selling something myself. Nobody has seriously compared palming to simply closing your eyes or looking out a window. There's no measurement showing that the darkness under your palms beats the darkness under your eyelids for reading fatigue. The idea is plausible, since the retina really does receive less light, but plausible isn't the same as measured.

What can be said honestly is that palms do something else, very practical: they guarantee the break. With your palms over your eyes, you don't sneak a glance at your phone, you don't keep reading "just this one line," you don't look at anything. A minute of just closing your eyes often turns into fifteen seconds. A minute with your palms over your eyes actually happens.

How to Sit, How Long, and What Not to Do

Warm hands matter, and not for mysterious reasons: a cold palm on your cheekbones keeps you alert, and you want the exact opposite. A few seconds of rubbing takes care of it.

Elbows supported. If you hold your arms up in the air, your shoulders do the work, and within thirty seconds your neck hurts instead of resting.

No pressure on the eyeballs. Your palms form an arch over the eye sockets, not a pressed-down lid. This isn't a formality: pressing on the eyes raises intraocular pressure, and if you have glaucoma, a recent surgery, or any eye diagnosis, that conversation belongs with your doctor, not with a reading technique.

Check the darkness. If you see red or orange through the gaps between your fingers, adjust the position until it goes black.

Breathe slowly, through your nose, with a longer exhale than inhale. Don't count anything and don't control anything else.

In the first few seconds, afterimages show up: colored spots, streaks, sometimes the outline of the text you were just reading. Don't chase them with your gaze, they fade on their own.

Sixty to one hundred twenty seconds is enough. Beyond that, nothing extra happens, and if you catch yourself sitting there for four minutes, you probably need sleep, not palming.

The right moment is the end of a reading block, not the middle of a paragraph. For a long session, two or three times. If you do it after every page, you've turned the break into the main activity.

What a Minute of Darkness Doesn't Fix

It doesn't increase your reading speed and it doesn't fix your comprehension. If reading is a struggle, the real brakes are elsewhere, and they show up one by one, the way I've mapped them out in what slows you down when you read.

It isn't treatment. Not for glaucoma, not for cataracts, not for amblyopia or strabismus, which call for something else entirely.

And if the fatigue doesn't ease up after breaks, if you get recurring headaches, double vision, or a blurriness that doesn't clear, book a checkup. A tired eye rests. An eye that's signaling something else doesn't.

What's left is small, and it holds up without exaggerating anything: a minute of looking at nothing, with warm hands on your face and slower breathing, between two blocks of reading. It doesn't heal your eyes. It makes the next hour easier, and that's about as much as the technique has ever been able to prove.
